It’s not nearly as easy to use as Backblaze or IDrive, but once you get the hang of it you may appreciate its toolset, which includes the ability to back up to multiple cloud locations. It’s also the only software we tested with in-place restore on both Windows and Mac. If you do want to dig into Backblaze’s settings, you’ll find some useful features but not as many options as in most other backup software. Instead of letting you manually select specific folders to back up, Backblaze provides an Exclusions tab and backs up everything else. This arrangement takes some getting used to, and “adding” a folder to “exclusions” might throw your brain for a loop, but once you get the hang of how it works, it’s easy to use.

Honest, Objective, Lab-Tested Reviews
They make it hard to truly secure files—the services themselves have the means to decrypt your data—and the burden is always on you to move files to the correct folder. The online account with WDMyCloud.com basically allows for a VPN-like connection over the Internet for computer users. This means you can just drag and drop files between the computer and the server as though the two were on the same local network. From within the same home network, via Wi-Fi, download the app on your mobile device from the Google Play or App Store.

This is probably due to some bottleneck in my home network, but don't expect to have great performance from this device out of the box, without upgrading your home network. The connection drops several times a week and the reading/writing is so slow as to make this nearly worthless. It was slow to upload info from our devices, but it seems to be doing it's job.
Backblaze’s privacy and security
It isn't easy or seemless to use across multiple devices or platforms. When moving among IOS Android Windows osx Linux it is particularly weak on IOS and Android devices. The 4TB Western Digital My Cloud Mirror Gen 2 is one of the easiest network-attached storage devices to set up on your home network. The device's only shortcoming is its mobile app, which could use some improvement, and I have no doubt that will happen via updates. And even at its current stage, with a price tag of just $250 for the top capacity of 4TB, the My Cloud is a steal. At this speed, the server can easily handle multiple data-intensive tasks at a time, such as backing up multiple computers while streaming HD video to multiple network players.
IDrive has an optional continuous-backup feature that you can set to run all the time or in timed increments , though it restricts continuous backup to files under 500 MB. We like the control offered here better than Backblaze’s less structured timing, but both services end up being a little confusing in this regard. Since IDrive doesn’t back up files over 500 MB with continuous backups, you should also schedule backups once a day.

But if you use the web client, IDrive uses an intermediate server that hosts the encrypted data temporarily and sends it through your web browser over SSL. Backblaze and IDrive have similar privacy policies, and IDrive’s policy notes that it will share data under subpoena from law enforcement. IDrive’s servers are in the United States in buildings with secure access. Although the company participates in security audits, they’re for internal use only. It also lacks a formal bug-bounty program, but the IDrive application is updated frequently. Backblaze is the most affordable backup software that supports both Windows and Mac, and it’s also the easiest to use of the group.

It also has a USB 3.0 port for storage extension or backing up data. The WD My Cloud is fast, affordable, and easy to use, and has a well-implemented, powerful personal cloud feature. Delivery time is estimated using our proprietary method which is based on the buyer's proximity to the item location, the postage service selected, the seller's postage history, and other factors. Arq Premium’s retention options provide a number of different lengths for retaining files.
It regularly hires third-party organizations to test security and participate in a bug bounty through Bugcrowd. If you already have a backup service you like, you probably have no reason to switch. Every backup service we tested had flaws, and finding a one-size-fits-all approach was impossible. IDrive isn’t as easy to use as Backblaze and costs more, but it supports multiple computers and offers more customization. Oh--they also intimate that you can stream videos from this to a smart TV. The only way you might be able to get your TV to play video files stored on your My Cloud Home is to buy a separate piece of equipment sold by Western Digital and hardwire that between the My Cloud and a TV set.

While 4TB is a huge amount, it can fill up pretty fast with multiple users. That said, the EX2 is ideal for a household with five users or fewer, even though the server supports up to 10 concurrent users. If your not someone who is comfortable getting in to the settings to make some of the more advanced features work then this may not be for you. Makes some drive noises off and on, but seems to settle down some time after using it for the day.
When I wanted to back up a large file, such as a 30-second video recorded on an iPad, the performance was slow. But this depends a lot on the connection between the mobile device and the server. For obvious reasons, it generally works better over Wi-Fi than over a cellular connection.

Taking the shape of a thick book in stand up position, the My Cloud EX2 shares the same design and physical shape of WD's My Book Studio desktop external hard drive. It has top-facing drive bays that you can access by pressing on the front part of its top and then replace or install internal drives in less than a minute. The server works with all standard 3.5-inch internal hard drives from any vendors. WD says it will honor the three-year warranty even when you use non-WD hard drives. Personal Cloud services are turned on by default, and you can access your files via the mycloud.com website or by using an app installed on your mobile phone or tablet. The My Cloud app has a built-in player for music, pictures, and videos, and you can reach your files over Wi-Fi or cellular connections.
Under the default settings, Backblaze encrypts your data, but that data can be decrypted with your account password. For another layer of privacy and security, we recommend that everyone enable a private encryption key, which adds to your backup another password that only you know. This means that if you lose your private password, Backblaze can’t help you recover it, but setting up this feature makes it impossible for anyone, Backblaze included, to view your backup without that password. Whatever third-party option you use, we highly recommend ensuring that you have local copies that get included in both your physical local backup as well as your cloud backup.

MacOS Big Sure has been out for over 8 months, and companies have had access to the latest OS for over a year. I didn't realize until months after I purchased this that it was explicitly designed to work with WDs servers. I've also read that the thing will cease functioning after a brief period if it loses access to WDs servers. Requires special software to "see" the drive, and it does not allow you to simply assign an ip address like a normal device. In all, this is by far the easiest system I've seen for remote access among all the NAS servers I've reviewed. The My Cloud is by far the easiest NAS server to set up that I've encountered; you literally just need to connect it to the power, hook its network port to a router , and you're done.
